Year 6 Spring 2017 Curriculum

Literacy: In English we will be following the National Curriculum with a focus on a range of genres linked closely to our themes ‘To the Rescue’ (Year 5) and ‘Rivers’ (Year 6). This will include reading comprehension skills with particular reference to SAT’s style questions in Year 6. Writing will cover a range of genres based around the new National Curriculum expectations and the topic theme followed by each year group.

Numeracy: This term in Maths we will be following the National Curriculum with a focus on a range of fluency, reasoning and problem solving activities linked direct to the Mastery approach. As well as this, we will have a session once a week, focusing on arithmetic or basic skills practice. Children are encouraged to develop independence, resilience and perseverance through challenges set. Children will learn their multiplication tables and related division facts through starter activities. To support this,

children will complete ‘Times Table Rock Stars’ challenges within class every week, and will also have this set as part of their maths homework.

Themed Work: Our themed work will be used to promote the learning of identified skills relating to the studies of Science, ICT, History, Geography, PE, Art, Music and Design Technology. These skills will be taught through a range of different contexts and activities. This term we have “To the Rescue” as our theme. The children, and their created Super Heroes, will be exploring the continents, oceans and major features of our planet.

This term the main theme is ‘Rivers’ and how water shapes the land. The skills the children will be learning include: Identifying parts of a river, using maps of the local area, making detailed sketches of a location. Locating major UK and world rivers. Understanding how settlements and humans are affected by water. Their trip to the River Crouch provided an excellent start to the topic.

Home Learning and Support

Home learning activities are set to reinforce and develop your child's knowledge and understanding.

Maths: Times tables, Rock Stars and any related class work

Literacy: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)

Topic: A longer, more developed task devised to encourage your child to focus on detail and presentation; often a week is given for this task to be completed.

You can support your child with their learning at home by:

  • Encouraging your child to read daily from a variety of materials
  • Sharing reading with your child
  • Discussing your child's homework tasks with them
  • Helping your child to practice their multiplication tables and related division facts
  • Helping your child become more organised and independent with completing homework tasks and bringing in the equipment/kit the need each day.

Some websites that you may find useful to share with your child for a range of revision and learning experiences are:

The children have also been given a DB Primary account to replace their e-folio ones. We are gradually introducing the features of it to them, which includes email, opportunities for home learning and class tasks to be set .
